North Fair Oaks ADU

The North Fair Oaks accessory dwelling unit reimagines compact living through light, volume, and careful planning, creating a space that feels open and generous within a constrained footprint. The architecture is defined by a roof pop-out that introduces north-facing clerestory glazing for soft, consistent daylight, paired with deep south-facing overhangs that provide passive shading and thermal control.

Designed for a hands-on owner-builder, the project emphasizes clarity, constructability, and thoughtful detailing, demonstrating how refined architectural intent can be carried through a self-built process without compromise.

project highlights

A sculpted roof form unites spatial generosity, controlled daylight, and passive shading into a cohesive architectural gesture. A carefully articulated roof pop-out introduces north-facing clerestory glazing, drawing soft, even daylight deep into the interior and creating a heightened sense of volume.

Complementary south-facing overhangs provide solar control and thermal comfort while reinforcing the building’s clean, contemporary profile. Together, these moves align aesthetic clarity with spatial experience and long-term environmental performance.
